I just bought a 490 so I'm going to have a lot of questions. First of all is how do I tell what year is it? Are wood kits easy to find? How bout patterns for the wood? The car is in pretty bad shape but fixable. It's going to need a fair amount of sheet metal work but it seems to be a simple body design so it shouldn't be too hard to make patch panels. What are some good sources for parts?
Thanks Jim

Gary Wallace (on vacation till the 27th) and the Filling Station carry several parts for the pre-29 vehicles. You can post in the Parts Wanted section below for specific parts you may need.

So how do I tell what year it is? It doesn't have a title so I can't use that.

Clean the engine and head. Carefully read every number on the engine and post it here. We will tell you what each group of numbers mean.

Jim,
Is there a data plate on the dash or firewall with a VIN number? Does the engine have a water pump and a V style fan belt or just a flat style fan belt and no water pump? Is the oil pump on the right front of the engine or in the middle of the block on the right side? Look on the top of the cylinder head from the left side of the car for a casting date (53118 = May 31,1918). Also, look on the right side of the engine block from a similar casting date. The date will be different perhaps by 6 months or so, but it is giving you a close time period of the car. Unless the engine has been swapped out before. You can still date the engine, though. Good luck on the restoration. 490s are fun cars to drive. Another 490 saved!
Cheers, Gary

As well as checking the casting dates on the engine and head, you should also check your chassis, as there is a diffence between 1916 to 1919 chassis , 1920-21 chassis and 1922 chassis
1916 to 1919 had 4 L shaped running board brackets , 1920-22 has only 2 L shaped running board brackets at the rear, with a riveted steel folded angle arrangement for the front running board support.

Thanks guys, I haven't brought the car home yet but when I do I'll post the casting numbers. If I remember it has the two running board brackets but I'm not sure. I have removed the body from the cowling back because of the wood being rotted and I don't want to transport the way it is. I'll keep you all posted.

Welcome in the 490 "section". Hope you will enjoy your car as much as I do with mine. Remember to use your camera a lot and save the digital pictures before you demount and all the way during the restoration. The edge of the flywheel is showing a vital production and year number on all 490s. Put some pictures here and we will come closer to the year of your car. All help here is of course given "f.o.c." and with no obligation, but still I would recommend you to join the VCCA, the sooner the better. These 490-cars are generally quite difficult to get parts to, as they are very rare these days. You most probably will need a lot of help and to get parts/vendors and to get it technically on the road again. Support needed is normally more easily obtained among other members than when asking from "outside".

I have printed off the membership application and will be sending in ASAP. As for my new purchase. The tag on the firewall is as follows:
Model: 490 ( of course) Car Number: 1A 95335
The block casting number is 327773 I can't see the head number yet.

Casting number 327773 is a 1924 engine block, there should be a date casting number also, looks something like
3 20 24 which equals "march 20th 1924" or some simmilar date.

Write the flywheel # here and we can determine the year (of the engine) better.

The only other markings on the block is on the driver side: F 19 2 and at the back the word Ferro with a line through it and the number "2" under it. On the head the only thing I can see is a 13 and a upside down 16 along side the 13. it has a 4 blade fan (I hear that may make a difference), a "V" belt with what looks like a pump. It also has a e-brake handle. I cannot see any numbers on the flywheel. The fenders look like the 20-21-22 type in the 490 parts catalog.
After a little more research into the parts catalog it looks like a 22. it has a rectangular gas tank.

Your block "F 19 2" is a casting date of June 19, 1922. The other features you mention are also of the same period.
