ok so I need to re-install the distributor. Engine at TDC now I need the rotor to be at the #1 spark plug wire but there is no marking on the cap or dist. The old manual doesn't seem to show the circle diagram showing where #1 is on the cap. Could someone describe to me where it should be?

as long as the firing order is correct, the #1 can be anywhere, where ever the rotor is pointed. the terminal at the right side cap clip would be the one used by the factory

Also, make sure that the number one cylinder is on the compression stroke and not the number six cylinder.

I always put no. 1 closest to the locating tab on the distributor cap.
