Need to replace the differential bearing in my 28 rear end. The bearing that was in the differential was a "New Departure" with "0208" marked on the outer race. My local NAPA store is unable to cross reference this bearing. Does anyone know of a moderen replacement?

The "New Departure" 0208 bearing is an angular contact ball bearing. The modern bearing number is a 7208 series bearing. These bearings support the ring gear carrier assembly. If you want a stronger, higher load capacity bearing, then your bearing supplier should be able to cross reference the 7208 bearing over to a Timken taper roller bearing.

The following are modern taper roller bearing No.'s that will directly replace tthe older style of angular contact ball bearings used on the ring gear carrier assembly.

Make: NTN 4T-30208

Timken 30208

The only difference between the taper roller bearings and the angular contact bearings is that the width of the inner race on the taper roller bearings is slightly wider, but there is ample adjustment available for the 2 ring gear carrier bearing adjustment nuts to take up this extra width.

I replaced the original angular contact bearings in my '28 truck in about 1984/5,and haven't had any troubles since. Also did the same Timken bearing change for the ring gear carrier assembly in my '29 Olds Landau Sedan,as they have a reputation "down under" for being axle snappers.

A big thanks to all for your help, My NAPA store had the 30208 bearings in stock at $38.00 each. The 7208 were not in stock and were $78.00 each, it was simple I bought the 30208's.
