Hi
what is the best grease to use on the shackles and steering linkage? also wheel bearing? Grease cups ?
Does the steering gear box use the same 600w non sulpher oil as the trans and rear end?
Ken

From the info I collected here:

shackles, steering linkage: basic EP grease from a grease gun. I plan on using Moly, but that is my choice.

Wheel bearings: tub o' grease, mine says general purpose.

Grease cups: same as wheel bearings, except water pump, it take the special calcium based NLGI 4 grease.

Steering box, some say 600W, some say thicker. There was just a thread on cornlube, which is a grease with an NLGI of 0, so thicker than 600W, but thinner than the general purpose grease which has an NLGI of 2.

Restoration Supply has "Penrite Oil Steering Box Lube 1200w, EP, non-leaking, manual boxes."
Anyone used it? Any thoughts or comments?

The Penrite Steering Box lube is brilliant to use.The only downside is getting the stuff to pour out of the bottle and into the steering box.I usually microwave the small plastic bottle it comes in for about 10-15 seconds for about 6-8 times
(don't do it continuously or the bottle will melt),and then it will pour out just like a thick engine oil.

cool

hi
-so would lithium grease work on suspension shackles, steering linkage
-tub of grease on wheel bearings
-lithium grease on water pump
-would lithium grease also work in steering gear, I got 600w but apparently its to thin.
-what about that sulpher problem, is that just trans and rear ends?
finding some time to do it right (sunday belongs to me and my 27)

Thanks for the quick replys. I'm going to rebuild the steerng gear box and try to use Bluezone's eccentric bushing to try to remove the gear slop. I will certainly use the Penrite lube and the pouring won't ba a problem with the gearbox out.

Ken, the restoration Supply listing for Penrite oils list if they are useable on "yellow metals" or not. Their catalog is viewable and downloadable at www.RestorationStuff.com

The only oils/greases that will "attack" or etch anything fitted with bronze bushes, are those that have an "Extreme Pressure"(EP) rating. The sulphur content is thing that does the damage, albeit very slowly.
The Mobil 600W Super Cylinder Oil I use is far from thin.I "thaw" it out in a container put into a bucket of hot waater, and it flows really well.If you mix the 600W oil with a graphite grease, you'll have something near the same consistecy as the Penrite steering box lube.
Ordinary lithium based grease is O.K. for your shackles, wheel bearings and kingpins. For your water pump, you need to use a calcium based grease(also sold by Penrite and others I'm sure),which will mix with your water over a long peeriod of time.

Modern GL-3, GL-4 and GL-5 gear oils have anti-corrosion additives so if they contain sulfur they are safe to use in units with bronze bushings.

This is a 'do it yourself' project. The following site takes you to Bluezone's description on how to do it.

I think you are pushing the DIY comment a bit too far. This does require a metal lathe. Not something you would find in most home workshops.

Shawng, you're right. I ment it was something that had to be made by someone with the right equipment, not purchased ready made.

Fair enough! It is too bad one of our more 'exuberant' members does not make these and sell them.
