Does anyone have the dementions for a 1929 service brake gauge? It should be easy enough to make one out of some scrap metal so I can set the brake rods correctly.

I have made my gauge from pictures in Chevrolet Service News.
The brake shaft are 7/8". Print the pictures on your printer so the shaft on the pictures are 7/8" and you have the draft you need.

Hello Gunsmoke.
This gauge can only be used on 1928 and 1929 models.
Your car has only one Cross Shaft. 1928-29 models have two shaft, side by side.

Thanks Arvid! I made one out of plywood using your drawing. It worked great. Main thing is the 35 degree angle from the rods to the pedel rod attach point. Hope to have it ready for the Ballard Washington Norwegian parade on the 17th. I hear its the biggest Norwegian day celebration outside of Norway.

I figured something was different. I have a picture of a '31 Brake Gauge which sold on eBay a while back for $65, and only have one view of front face of it so not sure what the business side of it looks like. Perhaps someone else can help.

Arvid,
In one of your postings you said that the brake tool you show can be used on a '28 & '29. I have been told that they are sightly different. Not much but just enough to not have everything at its optimum. Which one did you copy, the one for '28 or the one for'29. I have a '29 coupe like Bills. By the way THANK YOU for posting the picture.

Hello beachbum.

The copy was from 1928 service News. I have compare 1928 and 1929 service news, and can not see they are different. I thik the tool can be used on -28 and 29 car without any problems.

Regards
Arvid

I think in the 1929 Service News, it describes the 1928 guage as having the pin coming out on an angle. The 29 comes straight out.

You're right they sure look the same. I printed it off and will make up one in plywood like Bill. The few number of times I will use it the material should be no problem.

Arvid;
Check out this website that shows a few clips from our Region's entries in the Ballard parade. My 29 wasn't ready in time, so we used the brown El Camino with the little brown dog looking out the window.

Is anyone able to create an Autocad DXF file of the 1928 tool. My neighbour is able to CNC one for me out of plastic.

I see no one bit on the DXF. Can someone please confirm the dimensions. It looks like the tool is about 3.5 x 2.5 inches and the rod dimensions (mentioned earlier) are 7/8"

The outside dementions are not needed. It can be a square if you want. For my 29 I drilled two 7/8" holes in a piece of plywood to make the slot for the rods, cutting out the material beween the holes. From the center line of the slot, and the center of the inboard hole, mark a line at a 35 degree angle. Place the part on the rods, move the brake rod connection to line the hole up on the 35 degree line, mark it and drill a hole to install a bolt, or piece of round stock, to hold the brake linkage in place. Thats it.

Thanks. I can take it from here. If I am successful at creating a template in Illustrator, I will post it here for others to use.

If someone saves these diagrams as JPG or PDF and includes some titles to identify them, I'll save them in the Members Resource Center. That way they'll be permanently available in our Member Online Library.

I just wonder if you folks know that both the 28 and 29 gauges are available from one of our major parts suppliers for the 4-cylinders? Gary Wallace has invested the money to have these two gauges reproduced and offers them at a very reasonable price. To me, it seams a given that we support these vendors who try to keep us supplied with remanufactured parts to keep us on the road.

Slip on down on this thread to a posting on gauges.

Hi, I'm working on a '29 LQ 1.5 ton truck and am just now beginning my research into its braking system. According to the JAN 1929 issue of the Chevrolet Service News, I need a Truck Brake Adjusting Gauge part # N-376L. The pic from the C S News is attached.

The gauges in the FS catalog are not described as being for a 1.5t truck, neither are those in Gary Wallace's catalog, but I've emailed him.

Any other suggestions on where I might find a gauge? ...drawings to have one made? ...how to use it? (In the C S News drawing the horizontal member of the gauge appears to clamp to a bracket to place the gauge in the proper plumb/level orientation. I cannot find such a bracket on my truck.) ...alternative adjustment methods that do not require a gauge?

Thanks to all.
