I have the option to receive (as a gift = FREE) a 4 speed transmission. Should I convert from the stock 3-speed to a 4 speed?

I swapped the differential from a 3.90:1 to a 3.38:1. I realize I'll have to buy a custom gear if I want the speeds to match.

My truck is 1/2 ton. My memory says 4-speed was an option - was it really an option for 1/2 ton? I want to say it was only for 3/4 ton or higher.

Oh, and the tranny cover is rusted out anyway, so I planned on replacing it.

There has been some discussion here on this matter. By what I have been told the enclosed driveshaft models you will need to change at least the driveshaft and cover to allow for the difference in trans length, the open shaft may only need to change shafts. If you are not hauling heavy loads I cannot see the need for the 4 speed (granny gear) trans even with the taller rear axle ratio.
It is really a matter of personal preference of course.

There is no difference in the lenght of the original 3 speed as opposed to the original 4 speed ( as long as it has the exposed or "open" yoke on the back }.

Both will fit the truck without any modifications to the driveshaft.

We prefer to install 4 speeds in all of our trucks because the 3 speed shift linkage parts have proven to be problematic for us in the past...
There is alot less to go wrong if all you have is a single shifter arm stickin' out of the top of the transmission.
