Fellas,
I have an interesting problem. I am using 10W-30 oil in my '28 Coupe. It has about 15 lbs oil pressure at idle cold and 25+ lbs at higher speeds. The gauge needle is steady as a rock. As the oil heats up the pressures drop to about 5 lbs idle and 15-20 at speed. None of that is the problem. However as the oil heats up the pressure gauge needle begins to slowly vibrate and then when the engine is fully heated vibrates so much you can't tell the high pressure. At idle it is steady. What is the cause? Any ideas?

Have you tried another gauge to see if it does the same thing?

Didn't think of that but very well could be. Up to late '30 a 1/4" oil line was used which could have air in it. '31 and later used the small oil gauge line which did not have enough volume to oscillate. Will bleed the air out and see if that helps.

The gauge worked with the other engine I had in the same car. Will try bleeding the air from the oil line before changing gauges. Thought it might be associated with the oil pump but was hoping for something else as I have pulled the engine too many times to date. Yes you can take off the pan but getting the oil pan gaskets back on so there are no leaks is tough.

At one time we had an oil pressure gauge problem and the fix was to insert a piece if tag wire in the line. May have been a ticking in the gauge. Can't remember for sure.
