Myself and a couple of other guys are planning to make a road trip from Chicago,Il to Santa Monica, Ca in April 2010, Looking for helpful information from someone who may have done this. Plan to ship my car to Chicago and drive it home in California. I have printed the Turn by Turn directions off of the Mother Road web site. Any other helpful information would be appreciated. So far we have my car 1940 Chevrolet, a 1947 Cadillac Convertible and a 1932 Ford Sedan Delivery going.

Thanks in advance, Wes Marquis

I drove 66 numerous times in the early 50's. As I go the same route now on the modern freeway I look over and see sections of 66 and reminisce about my early travels. I still have visions of the Whiting Brothers gas stations, the billboards that were 100's of yards long, the Jack Rabbit, the pecan rolls, and several motels. I can't believe we drove those narrow roads at the speeds I traveled back then. Those were NOT the good old days.

I think you will enjoy your trip, especially if you traveled the route years ago.

While I havent been anywhere near 66 it should be a good trip. As Ray suggested the road probably has changed over the years which will detract from the historical point.

You might try to get ahold of Dennis or Jean Fink. I believe {?} they {& others} MAY have some experience/info on Rt. 66.

You can find contact info on Jean or Dennis in G&D, "Editors"

Enjoy the ride,

Blue Highways TV channel has done several segments on 66, as I recall there were several books that were used as references. Possibly a search of Amazon of a similar source would provide some information. There appears to be a lot of 66 still in the same shape and lots of the old time road side attractions available. The folks over at Chevy Talk are putting together a cruise much like yours, try Chevy talk .com and look under dd diner. talk

Wes:
Route 66 magazine has a map that takes you from east to west on 66. Go to www.route66magazine.com and click on gift shop. I think the price is $5.95.

There are various alignments of the original Route 66.
In the early days as the road needed repairs they would move portions of it. The original alignment between Miami and Afton in Oklahoma was only 9 feet wide and was only used a couple of years before Route 66 was re-routed and widened. It is still there as gravel farm roads, but you can discern the 9 foot alignment. It is the coolest portion of Route 66 that I have discovered and a lot of people do not know about it. The VCCA Region in Oklahoma "Heart of 66 Region" spends one weekend each year touring on the Oklahoma portion of Route 66. Many Europeans, especially Germans, explore Route 66 every summer. They are more fascinated about the old road then Americans.

May I suggest you publish your dates in the G&D and website and invite VCCA members to join you on portions of the drive.

Hey, Cordman

Great idea and I will do that as soon as I get all the scheduled times confirmed as best we can, Planning to do around 200 to 250 miles a day, so it will be a 10 to 12 day trip, and of course there's always the unexpected, the only planned date today is to leave from Lou Mitchell's Diner in Chicago at 10 am on Sunday 04.25.10, I printed out the turn by turn directions that are on the Route 66 web site, it seems to give you a lot of alignment options. I'm really getting excited about this.........
