Question: Are condensers interchangeable ? Can you use a condenser for a 6V in a 12V system? Can you use a Ford condenser in a Chevy? What is the best condenser for a 28 Chevy 4 banger?

in the later years (1934-1974) the same condenser was used for 6 and 12 volt ignition systems. The 8 Cyl. used the same condenser but with a longer lead wire.

There are many values for condensers. Each system has a calculated value. In use, if a deposit builds up on one side of the points the value should be changer to a higher value. If the new condenser is used and the deposit is on the other point, then the value should be changed until the deposit is eliminated.

Condenser capacity is related to both the coil being used,as well as the speed range of the engine. The following condenser values in Mfd.'s were taken from my 1941 D/Remy parts book:

Speed range Capacity

High 0.2 Mfd. D/Remy P/No. 1860020

Medium 0.3 Mfd. D/Remy P/No. 1849126

Low 0.4 Mfd. D/Remy P/No. 1858140

Hope this helps.

I have a 1937 non-Chevrolet that is not in parts books at NAPA.
I asked them for a 6 volt condenser. The car quit after about 20 miles. I learned from that experience that I have to use the correct Condenser in that car. After that experience I got the correct part number for 3 brands of condensers.

The oldest condenser in the NAPA book for CHEVROLET is 1932.
I ask them for a 1932 CHEVROLET condenser when I make a purchase for my 1927 CHEVROLET and I have had no problems, but it does not work on a 1937 CORD.

The condenser for 1929 thru 1931 is also the same as 1932.
