I have a relative wanting to sell her 1954 Chevy Bel Air 4 door. It has been sitting (on the ground or real close to it ) for at least 15 years. Cats can get in. The interior...well everything will need replaced. It is an automatic. All the glass is good. All the chrome is there and there are no major dents. Where is a good place to start? Thanks,Scott

Hi Scott,
I see no response for 10 days or so. I'll take a stab at it. Based on a recent "Old Cars Price Guide" (which is published every-other-month i.e. six times per year) I'd say you're dealing with a car in the #5 - #6 range.
#5 "needs complete restoration."
#6 essentially only good for a "parts car."
Those values range from about $3000 on the high to $1000 on the low.
Just guessing here, because I haven't seen the car, I'd say it's probably worth around $1200.
It's probably a bigger hassle to deal with, but it's possible it's worth more in parts than all together. But that includes dis-mantling. And getting rid of what's left. And that's a big hassle if the owner lives in the city, doesn't have room for storage, etc.
Sorry, but I don't think there's much value there. Just my two cents....
Bill.

Bill, That's actually more than I was thinking. I had it in the $500-$800 range. Maybe I'm just pricing it in case I got a chance to buy it! :) It would take a LOT of work, but what a beauty! I've always admired that car......

Scott,
It's entirely possible YOU are right on the money. Seeing as how it's a "relative," I was probably taking it a little easy. And I would always defer to the guy who has seen the car.
Another thought about 'value' -- if there aren't any buyers (not even ONE), I guess the value is zero. In that case, I suppose your relative would likely be thrilled to get $500!
As for your thoughts about admiring the car and "what a beauty," I couldn't agree more. I'm still looking for a '54 Bel Air sedan to replace the Black and White one my folks purchased in Fall, 1953.
Well, good luck whatever you decide to do.....
