On the bottom of the shifter shaft bracket which is mounted on the steering column, what goes in there; a bushing or a bearing to keep the shaft in alignment?

There is a bushing in the stamped support that is attached to the column.
Its part # 3693802, fits 1950-1954. is 1" o.d. 19/32" long.

Some NOS and repro stores allow you to "search" by using the GM part #. Thanks to Gene, that part has been solved, allowing you to search with confidence.

Good luck !
