1937-1950 1/2 ton pick-up spare tire carrier history.
The 1937 was the first to use the "mono-rail" system. A rail or track was bolted to the frame at the front and rear ends. A strap or carrier was attached to the rail at the front. It held the spare tire and was supported by a roller that slid in the track at the front and held up by a long bolt at the rear. A nut threaded onto the bolt at the rear. Then a lock was installed under the nut to prevent theft. When the nut was removed the rear of the carrier dropped down and then could be pulled to the rear with the roller running in the rack. This made it easier to unbolt the wheel from the carrier. This system was used through 1950. The track that was bolted to the frame fit from 1937-1940. The next version fit from 1941-1950. The 1937-40 version is shorter than the 1941 and up. The roller was the same for all years. The strap or carrier fit 1937-38, a new one for 1939-40, and another new one for 1941-1950. The 1941 and up version being of a channel design rather than a spring steel strap. The long bolt fit 1940-1950 but was simular to previous. Different parts were used for trucks that had the fat 700X15 tires. The same parts were used from 1941-1950 other than some of the minor brackets that were attached to the frame for the long bollt, etc I do not have the Chevs of the '40's truck catalog. I do have the unit pictured in the Filling Station's catalog and am sure it is the same. The track is not pictured and because it is bolted to the frame probably is still mounted to most trucks.
Now this is just a guess but if you have the original track on your 1940 truck it is POSSIBLE that the new unit COULD be made to work with some modifications.
Anyone having a 1941-1950 pick-up would have no problems as long as the track is still in place.
I have a picture of the parts from the parts book if anyone is intrested.

I would love to see the picture from the parts book. I have compiled a web page of photos of the carrier in my quest to find the correct parts. Link to the parts page for reference

Any time you wish to see something in a parts book, go to Tech Talk and look around. It is probably there.
