On my '38 truck, the starter will only spin for a second or two under power. I press the foot switch, it engages the flywheel, spins the engine over one full revolution or less, and then disengages by itself and spins down. It just won't keep cranking until the engine starts. I have to keep trying over and over until the engine finally hits. Any ideas? Switch on top of the starter, brushes, something else? Thanks for any ideas. Check Bendix drive gear, spring and flywheel teeth. Damage to one or more of them are the likely cause.

Its the clutch inside of the starter drive. The 1938 starter drive was a new feature on a 1938 and the 1938 through 1954 is the same. Try NAPA first and I see they are also available from the Filling Station. If your 1938 has the original drive you will find the newer ones will make the starter sound different. This was due to an improvement made in 1939.
