Noticed this winter that the compressor on my 1980 el camino 305 clicks on and off on any setting of the controle head except when turned to off. I replaced the switches on the control head with new and still have the same problem. Sure could use some help with this problem..Thanks, Roger

That reaction generally indicates a low charge. Check the visable sight gage while operating to see the reaction.

A rapid clicking off and on indicates system is low on freon. They do cycle off and on under normal conditions but not rapidly. Does it cool? The compressor should run only in AC mode or Defrost.
The 1977 and up does not have a sight glass.
The fact that the compressor runs on all setting is not mentioned in the shop manual. I would suspect either one of the many vacuum hoses running to the switch is either leaking or collapsed or the vacuum controll is broken or a plastic port on the connector is leaking or? There are many pages in the shop manual showing eletrical and vacuum wire and hose routing, etc.
On a car tha t age it could take a lot of detective work wink
