My question is for 490 owners that have a working speedometer assembly. Does the wheel gear mount flush on the left front inside hub or are there 3 spacers between the wheel gear and the hub? Also, are the mounting screws tapered or panhead screws?
Thanks,
Gary

No guarantees for correctness, but the 490 thats sitting 6 feet from my chair has spacers between the gear and the hub and its held on with slotted panhead screws.

1918 last year of the front wheel driven speedometer. In 1919 the speedo was driven from the transmission. Some guys switch transmissions in order to get the simple speedo drive.

The correct set-up for the front wheel drive for the 490 is extremely difficult to find. It drives from a different wheel than most wheel drives and is rare.

The cogwheel to the right in picture 6 is made of real ox leather (same as on HD from same years) to avoid noice.

Hope the pictures help.

Tell me how difficult it would be to find all the parts to put one of those together?

Are you referring to the heat sink? It has been made by some one in Australia, but I don't know the details yet.

Solan,

Thank you for the many pictures. It is a little difficult to see, but I think you have no spacers between the wheel gear and the hub. So, that puts me at 2 samples I know of that have no spacers and one that does. Just trying to get it correct originally.

Ray,

It was pretty difficult to collect all the parts. About a year and a half of searching and gathering pieces here and there. All my 490 had was the speedometer gauge when I got it. Everything else was missing.

Thanks,
Gary

I sure would like to score one complete. I made that a mission several years ago and was able to find some pieces, but was not able to complete it. I even had the professionals looking for me and the main problem was that Chevrolet drives off the left wheel.

Ray,

What parts are you in need of? I am assuming the left hand drive swivel which is hard to find, but I saw one sell on eBay a couple months ago for $80. I thought how cheap that went for. I will keep an eye out if you let me know what you need.

Gary

Hi,

I have the cable. I have parts and pieces of the remainder but for the record I need everything from the end of the cable. I will modify this post shortly and refer you to a picture in the above post.

Thanks for your offer, it is appreciated.

I need everything in picture 6.

I have a good speedometer.

Ray,

I have found a dealer in antique speedometer parts that appears to have all the parts you need. I assume you have a Stewart setup. He also lists other brands on his website. I have not dealt with him before and not sure how current his webpage is. He does not list prices for the parts and each piece is separate so, I imagine the cost for all the parts will be high. If you like I can send you a PM for his site and/or a list of the part numbers that you need. Do you need the spindle stud also? His shop is only open M-F otherwise I would have called him. Hope this helps.

regards,
Gary
