I have a '58 Impala. I would like to find out the past ownership(how many), dealer from where it was purchased, etc. I know it's a east coast car from the cowl tag(Tarrytown, NY). Vin # is the short version used back then, so carfax, which I think started in the '70's, is of no help. There must be some outfit out there that can research the car through the vin #. Any ideas or thoughts out there???

Unless you are phenomenally lucky you will not be able to trace your vehicle's history. Most states only keep 7-10 years of records on registered vehicles and then only the immediately past owner documents. Some counties keep records back many more years that the states but as you can imagine finding the correct county can be difficult. The most successful searches involve tracing from previous owner to previous owner.

Thanks for the reply. Guess I'll keep plugging away even if I have to pay to find out.
