The original Carter carb is gone and all I have is the later Rochester carb which I suppose would work fine but I would like to find a correct W-1 for '48. There are so many little variations in the w-1 carb over the years, how do I find out which one actually went on the car? Also, what is the difference in the model #s 574s, 492s, and 616s? When was one used vs. another? Sorry I am new at this, Thanks!

I have a good 1947-1948 core. I am sure it should be rebuilt.

I recently had carb problems with my '48 Fleetline. The Rochester carb had a leaking float. When I bought the car, I got 6 extra carbs, some Rochesters and some Carters. My buddy, an excellent mechanic suggested that he rebuild one of the Carters as he felt it was a better unit. When he finished the Carter, we went to install it and found that the intake manifold had been changed and the Carter would not fit. We had no choice but to rebuild the Rochester and reinstall it. It is all done now and the car runs fine but I have this beautfully rebuilt Carter W-1. If you are interested, I will sell it and ship it reasonably. I suspect that your 1948 has a later 235 engine seeing the Roch, would not fit.

Gene- You could be right. I had a spare intake manifold in the extra stuff that I got with the car that the Carter carb would fit, but we felt that it would be easier to put the Rochester back on rather than change the intake. One of these days I will get the numbers off of the block so that you can decode them like you did the spare motor that came with the car. I got a lot of extra stuff in the deal and it is proving to be a real blessing. When you have a car as old as this, you can't have too many spare parts. Thanks, John R.
