Have a 34 half ton pickup. I need to pull out the clutch package to send off to get refurbished. I would appreciate information on steps I need to take to get to the clutch disc, pressure plate and throwout bearing. For instance, do I have to move the rear axle back so I can slide the driveshaft and transmission back to be able to get to the clutch disc, etc.? Or can I do it in some easier way?

Or, would appreciate reference to above info. Thanks. williejoebob

It will not be necessary to move the rear axle back. Just split the U joint and drop the front of the torque tube down. The transmission then can be unbolted and removed.
The U joint is inside of the ball. Unbolt the four ball bolts and slide rear half of ball back on the torque tube. This will expose the U joint. There are four nuts that hold the U joing together.

once the u-joint is unbolted, the rear half of the joint will slide rearward on the propeller shaft.

this little ditty sure makes life easier when reassembling the u-joint

Chev Nut---Thanks so much. You have saved me a lot of time.

By the way, I was unable to locate a clutch package for my 34, so I will be sending clutch disc and pressure plate to be refurbished. Do you happen to know where I can locate replacement parts or do I need to just go ahead and ship them out to be redone?

After much ado, I think I have the clutch, etc back in correctly. I got a universal joint ball kit with the shims and new cork gasket. Now that it is all back together, how much gear oil goes in the ball housing? Should it be filled?

By the way, there is a grease fitting screwed in to the top of the housing. I assume that was just put there at some point over the years simply because it fit----would that likely be correct?

The grease fitting was most likey a 1/8" pipe plug as on the earlier models.

1/2 pint of SAE 160 or 600W is best. Lower viscosity fluids will leak out faster.
