I found pictures of the Olds and Pontiac oil bath air cleaners. The have a brace that goes from a head bolt to the side of the air cleaner, hence a threaded bolt hole in the side of the air cleaner. They have that ring that runs around the housing also but is not as centered as the air cleaner you have.

Beats the heck out of me guys. The PO says he's never changed it. Obviously the original owner isn't around to ask and the dealer isn't in existence any more either. The only stamping on the housing I've been able to find is the oil level line. Except for the contour on the upper piece it's made exactly the same way shown in the manual Fig 83. It may be a mystery that's never solved. laugh

Tiny,
I have the same oil bath air cleaner on my 1938 Chevy Coupe. The car is fairly original. The factory Code number states that the car came out Los Angeles, CA. I was told that it was a heavy duty option.
