i have read the 'school's in session' bit and it is not clear on what to adjust for the end play. is it the threaded inside ring or the larger outside ring that is secured in the housing? both have adjustment notches. Once I know this, I can then measure and go get the right sized wrench. an old style bicycle crank wrench should do the trick.

At the bottom of the steering box, you'll find a forged bracket that is attached to the steering box,and it has 2 bolts that hold it to the box. This bracket also supports the advance & retard/hand throttle tubes.
The bolt you need to loosen is the lower one, where the machined split is at the lower end of the steering box.Once the bolt is loosened, turn the large plug with the 4 slots in it,to the right to remove any excess endplay in the steering gear main shaft. Then re-tighten the clamping bolt.Just make sure you don't over tighten the slotted plug adjusting nut, tighten just enough to remove any endplay.
This information can be found in the Chevrolet Repair Manual for Chevrolet Capitol & National Cars,Series AA-AB,on page 116(my copy anyway). You should be able to get a copy one from the Filling Station or other sources.Hope this info helps you out.

Thank you! I do have the repair manual, but what confused me is the inner threaded piece that also has the four notches for some adjustment. There is no mention on what it is for.

The inner threaded piece only screws into the larger adjustment so far,and it is only there as a support for the advance & retard/hand throttle tubes. It has nothing to do with the end play adjustment of the steering main shaft. There is a small picture of this bit in the sectioned view of the steering box.It appears to just bottom out into a small recess in the larger adjustment plug.
