Is there a way to get the defroster knob off the cable? or is it molded onto the cable end?

No idea of what year car / truck you're asking about, but almost all the cables I've run into (late-30's) have the knobs molded onto the cable end.

Thanks, Bob. That's what it looks like to me and it just won't budge without chipping the bakelite.

I agree with Gene, Filling Stations NEW monthly email announcements are GREAT. This month it is full of NOS parts.
The whole concept of FS email announcements, how-to, etc, is a perfectly timed strategic move, and full of VALUE. At least from this former marketing guys perspective.
If your a VCCA member and not on FS email list, do so. You'll be pleased you did.

I asked someone recently via PM how to become a dues-paying member but never heard back.
Is the step-by-step procedure online? I have a defroster cable coming from Chevs of the 40s but I want to take the original knob off and put it on the new cable.

To join the VCCA just go to the VCCA web site and sign up. Here is the link to the application form: http://www.vcca.org/application.htmAlso, as mentioned in a posting above, the step-by-step procedure on how to replace the knobs is in the latest email newsletter from the Filling Station. Call the Filling Station and ask them to email you a copy.

I'm a customer of them. Do they automatacally put you on or do you have to request it?
I think I'm a fairly wise person because I'm smart enough to realise I'm not too bright.

Lee,
Make the swap at the cable to knob shaft connection, not at the knob. Bend open the metal shaft the knob is molded on so that the old steel cable can be removed from the old knob shaft. Cut the new cable and push the new cable into the open end of the old knob shaft and crimp, slide this into the new cable sheath. You may have to cut the sheath a little shorter but it should work fine.

Thanks for your note, Brian. I have taken the assembly apart now.
I don't believe your solution works for the cable-knob I have. The knob is molded onto a metal shaft. The cable wire comes out the end of this metal shaft. The cable wire looks like it is molded into the metal of the shaft. I don't see a way to get the cable wire out of the shaft.
Do you know?
THanks,

Put the knob in boiling water to loosen it.
