Success!!! The windshield rubber on my '49 Chevy 4400 has leaked due to weather checking ('weather checking' is a term usually applied to old tractor tires and is cracking due to age and being in the weather). It has been leaking for some time as is evidenced by the water trails down the dash from the corners of the windshield. And I've seen it leak many times. Yesterday we in South Dakota have had some good rain storms and no water gets in the cab.... except....

The forward corners of the cab floor show water. But it looks like that water comes up from the ground coming into the cab through a hole in each corner. I've seen that corner hole in the floor in several Chevy trucks of the late 40s and early 50s. It doesn't look like a rust hole... I don't believe it is a rust hole. Does anyone know about these corner floor holes?

I had similar a "corner hole" in my 1951 COE on the driver's side of the cab. I determined that it was a rare Chevrolet accessory known as a "tread checker". I could look down through the hole while I was driving the truck and check the tread on the left front tire!

Actually, the corner hole in my truck was a rust out, which seemed to be a common problem with those types of trucks.

Someone may have put the holes in the floor to let the water out that was coming in at the windhield. My '49 doesn't have any holes in the floorboards.

Many thanks, guys. I'll clean it up and fill it in with JB Weld.
