Hello,I wanted to ask about the electric temp sensor unit put on 29 chevs.My engine does not have sensor but has the guage. wandering if I should look for an original or opt out for some modern one.Does anyone have more info on the history of these??

New old stock 1929 electric temperature sending units are still available. You can purchase one from the Filling Station in Lebanon, Oregon.

The 1929 electric temperature gauge was a one year only application. In 1930, the temperature gauge was changed to the capillary tube type.

I would suggest staying with the correct temperature gauge and sending unit for your 1929.

1929_Chevy here....Again looking at my '29 engine.....there is No port for ANY sensor on the front!So what is with that????

You probably do not have a 1929 head on it.

If there is no threaded hole on the left front of the cylinder head, but there is a threaded hole on the top, left rear of the cylinder head then you have a 1930-31 cylinder head or a 1932 cylinder head.

Post the casting number that is on the cylinder head and someone will tell you what year the cylinder head is that you have.

let me ask:
At my 1931 chevy it is a capilar-tube type. I think so. But I bought at ebay an old 1931 booklet "Chevrolet 1931 restorer" about the 1931 chevy, and there is a complete wiring diagram and it shows as well an electric gauge. What is true now? I am sure to have a capillar system, because it works with switched off ignition too.

You are correct that the 1931 has a bulb type temperature guage. Only the '29 has electrical. I suspect the electrical diagram was one that covered 1929-1931 or later as except for the temperature guage and lack of electric fuel guage in '29 they have the same wiring.

The electric temperature gauge was used in 1929 only. 1930 was the first year for the capillary type of temperature gauge and that type of gauge is correct for your 1931 as well. The 1930-31 cylinder head was not drilled and tapped in the front left side for an electric sending unit.

By the way, the 1929 electrolock is wired differently than the 1930 and 1931 electrolocks also.

Finally took my valve cover off to get the casting number..it is #836273.Can anyone please look up to see what year my head was made ? Thankyou.

You could see if you can track down one of the supplemental replacement type. It is a capillary type and is listed in the service bulletins. It has a long tube to be able to screw into the head in the original 29 location. The only thing I have not found is how they route the tubing. I suspect a person would want to keep it away from the exhaust manifold which is on the same side as the mounting hole in the head.

I purchased one of the NOS sending units a couple years back. Installed it and still no reading at the gauge. I then sent the gauge and sending unit to a vendor advertising on this site. He tested both units and declared that neither part was functional and further discouraged me from attempting to get the gauge repaired citing the design of the gauge as being highly prone to failure. I resigned myself to settling for the radiator mounted moto gauge.


Don't let a day go by that you don't attempt to learn something new.
