I have a 1930 4-door sedan... fuel gauge does not work, suspect dash gauge. Units are removed. How would I trouble shoot this problem. Jim

With the sending unit removed you can test with an ohm meter one lead on the wire connection and the other on the housing, should be 0-30 ohm range. I like to test the dash unit by taking the wire off the sending unit and when you ground the wire the gauge will go to empty and the wire not grounded it should read passed full, if so the wiring and dash unit are fine. Be sure and check for voltage at the dash unit.

Jim, I sent you an email with detailed instructions on how to test both your sending unit and the gas gauge on the bench since they are out of the car.

Thanks for the info. I also got some great info from junkyard dog. I'll be trying these tomorrow.
Thanks again

The sending unit is normally grounded through the gas tank if all of the connections are clean. However, you can attach a ground wire from one of the sending unit screws to a clean spot on the frame of the car.

The sending unit is grounded by default through the mounting plate screws, through the tank to the frame of the car. You could always run a wire from one of the screws to the frame of the car, just to be safe.

Yep, it sure does and I thought of that since the two postings are 3 minutes apart. One of us obviously types faster than the other. bigl bigl bigl
