I'm getting ready to do my dash and garnish mouldings. The woodgraining posting is quite timely.I can't seem to figure out how to remove the lock from my glove box door. There is a catch that is considerably wider than the hole. Any suggestions?
Best Regards, Pat

A local VCCA member had the same problem last Fall. He worked on it, I worked on it, all with no results. He took it to a locksmith and said the guy had it out in a flash. I have removed many of the later ones but they were nothing like that.
I studied you "extra parts" pictures and can't help. Looked though parts books and body manuals. Also never saw ahythig like it on my car.
Would have answered sooner but my PC was down for awhile.

No, its a one year only design. The center of the knob does not depress and a flat firction spring slides against the striker to keep the door closed. When it is locked a pawl on the back rotates with the cylinder to prevent it from opening. Its the strangest thing you ever saw.

Thanks Gene,
I will post them on the photo forum with a notice on the "year" forum. We'll see what happens.
I'm not sure what to do next with the glove box lock. Do you think more prople might see it in the "year" forum?
Best Regards, Pat

I believe it is the same as my 37 pickup. The door just pushes shut and when you turn the key a small "tongue" slips into a slot on the latch at the top of the door on the dashboard opening which locks the door. Right? If so, I can tell you how to get the lock off of the door, which is tricky. You have to know exactly how to do it. Let me know if the latch is the same, or sounds like it's the same, as yours. Joe

Joe: I've got the same problem with the glove box lock on my '37 truck. Maybe this would be a good topic for a G&D article?

I have just posted pictures showing the locked and unlocked positions as well as one with the barrel coming out. The locksmith picked my lock the other day but couldn't remove the lock. He made a key and figured out how. With the lock in the unlocked position, pinch the spring on the pawl with your thumb, turn the lock to about the 11;00 position and pull the barrel out. Only then can you pull the pawl and remove the lock body.

That's it exactly! Note: You cannot remove the lock with out the key unless you pick the lock or have it picked. If a key can be made, that will do it. It may not be a cheap proposition to pay for this, but there is no other way it can be done and you eventually will need a key anyway. Joe

A thank you to both of you. I will be at the locksmith soon. I just went through the key code key scenario on the door lock and can tell you that ONLY the Basco # 11 blank worked. An alternate Curtis blank cut to the same code will not work. Thanks again, Jerry

What is the Basco number for the glove box lid? I guess I should ask the Basco number for the ignition also. We have several old lock shops around but they have lost old books thanks, Joe

If you get the code number off the lock I have book that covers key codes for 1934 Chevys.

I looked at both my Glove box locks and they have these numbers on the barrel:P384 and P392. The keys are Cole National USA on one side and National Key BIM on the other side.

Don't have codes in that book for Cole locks. Do for B&S, Hurd, Yale.

I used www.key_men.com for the 34' door lock. Good people, online only, has the patterns for the codes, has the keys (use only Basco) reasonable. They ONLY accept paypal. No code on my 34' glove box lock. Jerry
