I have a modern coil wired to the electrolock cable...other than the correct coil, as compared to our '40 kc, it seems to be missing some parts...what am I missing between the electrolock cable & the high tension wire?.. epi

I thought the Electolock on the 1930 went to the distributor rather than to the coil as it does on the 1940, or is my foot in my mouth again? The armored cable goes to the distibutor breaker and separate wires from the ignition switch go to the + and - terminals of the coil.

okay, sorry...my REAL issue is: there is a braided cloth conduit that exits the firewall just above the electrolock cable...it has three wires, one which goes to the starter motor... the two wires which go to the coil are bare (or almost)... other than the brass ferrule at the end of the braided cloth, is there anything else that is supposed to be there?.. if I order new replacement wire, say from ynz, should the wires have terminals for the coil connection, and if so, what kind/size/material?.. thanks, epi

I don't have the color codes or AWGs for a 1930, so time for Ray or Skip to clock in.

Kepi Doodle! Do you have a wiring diagram for your 1930? If not get one, and then you will better understand what is going on with the electrolock, distributor and the coil hookup. The wires that go to the side of the electrolock (coil terminal and coil/gauge terminal) have metal eyelets on the end of the wire. The I.D. of the eyelet fits a #8 screw.

thanks, guys...I assume that the eyelet is a solder-on type, as opposed to crimped?.. what gauge wire would I order from ynz?..black fabric, right?.. epi

Yes, the eyelet is of the solder on type. Why don't you just order a "mini-harness" containing the wires that you need that go from the starter to the electrolock? Or a complete new wiring harness if the one in your restored truck is in need of repairs?

Why not paste a picture of an original coil on here so we would know what to look for.

That's okay Leo......I tried the coil out on my vintage coil tester and it works just fine! It rated "Super" on the machine.

For all you guys that believe that all the original coils are bad, I have been running one on a 1931 Fire Truck for over 10 years. It also has an original oxblood cap, all original wires and ends, original style condensor (can't verify if it is original or just old stock). For shows I also run AC G-12 plugs. Never had anyone mention that the original ignition parts.

Over the years I have tested at least 15 original used 1929-32 coils. Out of those, the one on my 1930 coupe, the one on my 1932 sedan, and one spare used coil tested out good. All of the other coils tested out as being defective. The new old stock coil that I have also tested out as being good.
On the condensers, they do have a shelf life and it is very common to have new old stock condensers that are 15 or 20 years old to test out as being defective. At one time I had 25 new old stock 1929-32 condensers. These were the long condensers that are correct for 1929-32. All 25 tested out as being defective and they went into the trash can. :( :( :(

dog, it's a modern, non-descript coil...the diameter's too small, as the clamp is pulled so tightly around the coil that the screws in the firewall are barely holding the bracket... so are there any available coils that are least the right physical size?.. epi
