Yesterday morning about 0830 hours, my dad who is 77 came out of a local bank with a bag of money to deliver. While going to his truck he slipped on some ice and fell hitting his head. Fortunately my Lt. from work happened to be driving by and saw him lying on the sidewalk. My dad was somewhat concious and was transported to the hospital.
It turns out he has a fractured skull and had an internal bleed. As of about 1500 hours yesterday they had him in the ICU on several drugs keeping him sedated. In the emergency room he was trying to talk but was unable due to his injuries. Not being able to communicate was obviously bothering him.
About 2200 hours last night I received a call from the doctor stating he has taken a turn for the worse. They now have him on what the doctor called "high powered medications" to try to control his symptoms.
I haven't heard anything since then and will be heading into the hospital soon. I have a bad feeling about what's likely to happen but have faith in God he will take care of him either way. Less than two years ago, the same thing happened to his brother in Minnesota which resulted in his death.
I would appreiciate your prayers for my dad, Dick Johnstone and I'm sorry to have to post something like this.

Well, my worst fears are coming true. My Dad, Dick Johnstone is not going to make it. Even with the most powerfull drugs, he is not responding properly. He has not been concious since they took him from the ER to the ICU. He's not brain dead but has such a traumatic brain injury he would never be the same if he was to ever recover which is unlikely.
According to his living will, I have ordered his ventilator and all medications removed except the pain control medicine. It's hard to explain but this was probably the hardest thing I have ever had to do yet it was what he wanted and I guess it is probably for the best.
Because of this ordeal, I urge everybody to have a will and a living will so the really tough decisions don't have to be made in a time of crisis when judgement under stress might affect a good dicision making process.
I'm sorry for posting this here but everybody on this site is kinda like extended family to me. I want to thank those of you who have prayed for my dad and hope you will continue.

Bruce My sympathies are with you and your family. I have lost 3 good close friends in the past two years due to cranial bleeding resulting from a fall. The husband of one is still recovering from his fall and resulting surgery to relieve pressure.

Thanks to everybody for all your prayers. My dad died yesterday at 3:20pm in the Rapid City Regional Hospital. He never suffered while in the hospital and went peacefully. His funeral is scheduled for Friday March 20th at the First Presbyterian Church here in Rapid City. I'm really going to miss him.

Bruce, Peggy and families Dick will surely be missed by you and also the VCCA family. He was one of the finest gentlemen that Cathy and I met. We have fond memories and occasionally remember the dinner we had together in 2002. May God bless and comfort your family in this trying time.

Bruce and Family,
I'm very sorry for your loss. Please remember that from now on your Dad will allways be by your side.
Eventually the sorry will go away and the good memories will live on.
May God bless you,
RayG
