A friend's 69 chevelle SS has a problem with fan hitting fan shroud only when turning left. It has power steering. What is the proper size fan for a 396 base engine with a/c? Could he have the wrong motor mounts. It seems on camaro of that year, there were several different mounts depending on which engine is used. Any suggestions appreciated.
Thanks,

Just checking the parts book the mounts were the same for most engines and styles. The 1968 and previous mounts will fit in that car but are a more simple mount. If the mount seperates (and those were know for that) the engine will raise up and all kinds of bad things happen They had a recall on those years ago and hung brackets with cables running to the frame to keep the engine down in place. The 1969 should have the newer interlocking style mount that prevents the engine from raising in event of mot seperation. The simple 1968 mounts will fit in a 1969 and the interlocking mounts can be used in a 1968.
The motor mount test is to hold the brake pedal down hard (do this in a safe place), put the car in gear and floor it. With the hood open see if the engine(air cleaner) raises up excessively.
When the mounts were bad the engine would raise up, pull the PB hose from the booster, open the accelerator wide and all kinds of fun things could happen.
The AC cars had an 18" fan which again was used for many engines and styles.

My 1969 and 1970 Impalas had the same problem which was caused by broken motor mounts. Both cars had the newer type of interlocking mounts. I replaced the mounts three times in the 1969 Impala and the interlocks still didn't keep the motor from trying to lay on it's side each time the mounts broke. I finally put on another new set of mounts and then I installed the brackets and cables on both cars. Never had a motor mount problem again!
