I purchased a '36 engine from VCCA member and am having a problem with the spark plug holes being too small. A standard thin walled 13/16" spark plug wrench is about 1.050". The holes in the pushrod cover are 1.030". Did someone possibly put on a later model pushrod cover that uses the 10mm plugs? And, if so are there any 14mm plugs that will fit the smaller holes? The engine casting number is 836010-4 and cylinder head casting number is 837981 if this is any help in sorting out this weird problem.

The 1941-1948 engines with 10 MM spark plugs used the same side cover (and round corks) as a engine (head) with 14 MM plugs. The cover will not fit 1936 and prior engines. The hex on the spark plug should be above the side cover hole and the socket does not go through the hole (opening).....is the side cover fully in place? or sticking ou too far?

The spark plug holes on my 36 cover are approx 1.050". The casting numbers you have are correct for a 36. Sounds like the cover is wrong.

Today I took the sparkplug socket and pounded it through the spark plug holes in the panel and enlarged them a little bit. I ordered a new gasket set from The Filling Station for a '36. After painting and then installing the panel I will be sure to get the holes centered on the spark plugs. They sure don't give you much room for error. Whoever put the panel on last aparently didn't realize how close the tolerences are. You would think this is a Mercedes Benz. Ho ho. Thanks for your help guys.
