RATS !!! I just dropped my exhaust manifold and broke off about 3 inches from the end. Is there any way to weld the end back on and have it not rebreak with the expansion and contraction that occurs as you run the engine??
Thanks, Mike

I would advertise for a manifold. It would probably be cheaper than the cost to have it welded. It can be welded, but it may cause more troubles than its worth.

I agree with Ray. Welding cast iron is difficult enough. Welding a cast iron part that gets hot and cools often is even more of a gamble.

Put your money in a replacement part. You will be happier in the long run.

The exhaust manifold that is referred to in this thread on ebay is for a 1949 Chevrolet and newer. Note how the exhaust manifold is angled towards the rear of the car where the exhaust pipe attaches. This exhaust manifold on ebay will not be correct for your 1941 Chevy....and your exhaust system will not bolt up to this manifold.

Thanks all for the help/advise. I sensed that the ebay part was not compatible when I saw the different bend to the bottom. There is another manifold for sale (right part number) that comes with an intake, but appears to me questionable since the damper is frozen and when I posted a question the answer was incomplete. I guess I asked to hard questions (Has anyone tried to loosen up the damper? Would they sell only the exhaust part?).

I took my broken manifold to a welder today and for 30 dollars he rewelded it. I got a family member discount, since the guys cousin was with me. He seemed to be very knowledgeable about welding cast iron and said he had had good results with work on engine blocks. Another friend pointed out that an engine block would never see the heat changes that a manifold would so I think I will give it a try and also try to find a good replacement. I did post a want add on the VCCA site so am interested in any member's help with this.

I can not say enough about how thankful I am to all who have helped me with my many postings. There is no way that I could enjoy this hobby without all your support. I love tinkering on my 41 winters and driving it when the snow melts in the spring. Thank you, Thank you, Mike

Good luck with your 1941. Just a couple of years ago, we, the VCCA had a Central Meet in Midland, Michigan. I remember a certain 1940 business coupe that made the front page of the local paper while we were there.

A properly welded manifold should not be a problem. I have split several 216 manifolds and the new 2nd outlet had to be welded to the manifold. Never had one that leaked or cracked. talk
