Grandpa never liked the top down, so he did not make any saddles to hold it. I have purchased the saddles and attached them to some long bolts to screw into the holes on the sides of the car. This works okay, but the top sits up too high and does not look good. It needs to rest further down.

Does anyone have any pictures they could share of a 24 with the top down so I can see what holds the saddles to the car? Somebody told me once they used wood back then and I could make some supports. Not that talented, but I would like to try something different as I really like to tool around with the top down.

Thanks,

Bruce

I tried to send an email to your geocities site last week. I had trouble registering on vcca. I don't know if you received it or not, but I have a 24 chevy with what I believe are the original saddles. I can take pictures, measurements or what ever you need. My problem is I inherited the car from my father and I'm not sure how the whole thing comes together. The top on mine has to be unsnapped from the body to install the supports and there is a cover that goes over the top in the folded position? Let me know. Greg

It has been a VERY long time since I looked at it , but my Dad has a 1921 490 touring with 10,000 original miles and is buried way in the back of the garage. IF I remember right the saddles are about even with the rear seat back and screw into the wood body frame between the body metal and the uphostery. You open the saddles, then lower the bow sockets into it as you fold the top down and then fasten the saddles down. They keep the top from bouncing when the car goes over bumps. My 24 Oldsmobile touring has a trunk in back and when the top folds down on it, the top rests on top of the trunk and should have a cover to keep the bows from bouncing and expanding when on bumpy roads, If it had some other type fastening system, It is missing on that car.

It just seems to me that the top does not go down far enough with the saddles at that height. When it gets warmer I will post a picture to show what I mean. The driver has no vision out the back because the top sits up too high. Even though it is folded, it sticks up to just above where the rear window would be if the top was up. It appears that the top should fold further down and not stick up so much.

Thanks for the reply!!

Hi Gregs 24!! Yes I would be very interested if you could send me any pictures. I did not get any emails, my address is batolson@yahoo.com. Yes the top does have to be unsnapped and there is a cover, although I do not have one. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated!!!

Gregs24 sent me these pictures. I found this setup pretty fascinating. His note was:

"I have attached some pictures of the saddle supports I have. They are two pieces that bolt together. There is a left and right of the bottom portion and I am not sure if the picture of the support on the car is on the right side. There is also a hole through the support which I think is for another part to go through to keep the top from bouncing?"

Can anybody tell us what goes through the hole in the third picture?? Must be something that is used to strap the top bows down. I am used to the slots for the leather straps.

When all else fails, a desk jockey can do something temporary!!! Just a threaded rod screwed in until I can do better.
