I have just bought what appears to be a 1928 tourer going on the body style and engine, but there is no vin plate, is the chassis number stamped somewhere on the chassis? My car is in Britain but I believe it to be and Australian import

I doubt that you will find a chassis number stamped on an Australian "28". They were sent CKD which included things like the chassis and mechanicals to which the bodies were added in Australia. With the CKD kit came a plate which was attached to the seat frame on the RH side. Mine says MODEL NATIONAL; Car Number 22 AB 7078. Of course being nailed to a bit of wood which often rotted away meant that the plate became lost. There are also other Australian plates that were nailed onto the wooden sills. They are usually simple plates that say things like, Holdens Job Number 4661. Of late the authorities have insisted that we have chassis numbers stamped on. You can have anything you like so long as no-one else does.

Aussie RHD chassis no.'s were put on the inside of either the LH or RH frame rail by a stencil method in white paint.

Very interesting. How long does white paint last? If you find it let me know.

That is my issue, I need to register the car and as such it needs a chassis number, the plates have definitely gone along with most of the wood and there is no paint left on the chassis just the typical Aus light rust.

I also have Triumph TR3A sports car and they never had chassis numbers. I restored it and when I went to register it the authorities requested a stamped chassis number. I pointed out that they never had one but they insisted that I go away and find one. It had a plate on the cowl with a commission number on it; TS81072 so I borrowed a set of metal stamps and punched that number on to the chassis. They then happily registered the car. I suggest that you do something similar. Something like "28" for the year number ,"P" for passenger and a number between 1 and 8000 because they built about 8000 in Australia in 1928. 28P4002 sounds like a good number. You could of course toss in a number that you can rememeber easily; like your birthday. The bottom line is they must know that a lot of cars never originally had stamped chassis numbers, like my TR and my 28 Chev.

The white paint will last til it either fades or you blast and paint your chassis.

As per a previous post I went though Australian chassis numbers. For registration if one cannot be found we stamp one in. Most go on the side of the chassis rail just beside where the steering arm comes out, or if you are fanatical about originality (as I am) then stamp it on the top of the rail beside the petrol filler as this where most of the original ones that I have found are located. They were just a 5 digit number Chris
