What is the hole near the studs for? I looked in manual and old posts and couldn't find anything on them?

Just wondering!

Thanks

I think David is talking about the wheel studs,

I think it could be a vent hole or breather for the bearings.
I am fairly sure my 1939 has vent holes near the wheel studs.

Don't think any of us know why there are there. I have noticed them in many years. Some are full circles others look like a circle with triangular insert. Maybe it is to help in machining the parts. Has to have a reason because the car companies always had a reason.

On the brake drum there are holes for the studs.Midway between two of them there is another 1/2" hole. It has been years since I worked in that area but I seem to recall that there is a plate that sits between the brake drum and the disc wheel. It has a slot in it which apparently lines up with the extra hole in the drum.
The parts manual lists a Front Wheel Hub Oil Deflector and gasket for Series AB and I believe that the hole/slot all relate to that oil deflector.
Let us know if that is correct

Page 97 in the 1931 repair manual shows a front hub section veiw , and does show an oil deflector leading from the inner bearing seal to the wheel stud flange.

I'm not sure how a deflector would work on a Chev 4, but on my 34 Master the inside of the axle flange has a metal slinger that catches any lose oil and directs in through the hole in the flange through into the hub cap

Interesting guys! Thanks!

The "hole" thing has some meaning now!
