The gear shift on my '41 Coupe keeps slipping loose on the shaft. I have tried tightening the nut on each side. Every so often I lose first and reverse (on the column). I have been using a long screw driver to bring the gear shafts in line (under the hood). Is the shaft just worn out? Or is there an adjustment that can be made (like a bushing)? Help. Thanks,

Dan.

Hi,

I need a bit better description as to your problem. Are you saying that the connection on the side of the transmission keeps getting loose?

Do you still have the vacuum shift and is it installed and operating?

Ray asked a couple of questions. I have another. Is the problem that then the shift lever is moved it sometimes fails to move the arms on the column? Those are the arms that connect to the levers on the side of the transmission. The better you describe the problem the easier for us to understand the problem and possible fix.

Ray: Chipper is right. It is on the steering column itself.
The rod that goes to the 1st and reverse gears does not engage.
I do not have the vacuum on at this time. My mechanic had taken it off and "built" a kit to replace it. I have had problems ever since. I want to put the vacuum back on. But, for now, I have to "reengage" the gear rod my hand, when it comes loose. Thanks,

Dan.
