A new member today-- I have a '46 Chevy 1/2ton pickup with 4 spd original tranny, 4.11 rear end, and a '55-57 235 engine. So, greetings and now that's out of the way I could use some help with a speedometer gear. No expert here. But I understand there is a gear that sits atop the tranny (?) and I need to find a replacement. I have the old one in the glovebox, about four inches long with a gear on one end. From what I looked up, I believe these have 12 teeth. Don't have truck here today to check directly. Know where I can find a replacement? And since the old one is chewed up, what else does that tell ya. thanks.

Tried to respond to this earlier. Would be certain that the tranny is drained and clean from any foreign material that may cause problems later. Would assume that any model (1941 thru 1953) 4 speed tranny speedometer gear will work. Check a junk yard or one of the suppliers that advertise in the G&D.

Wow - I've been looking for a Chevy forum - finally found one. I've been on the Plymouth forum for many years.

Anyway - My speedometer drive gear was chewed up. Pieces of the U-joint were floating around in the transmission and it chewed up the gear. I've been meaning to replace it but I want to replace the rear end to give me a little more speed on the freeway. When you change the rear end it will affect your speedometer reading.

I guess what I'm trying to say is before you replace the drive gear make sure you're keeping the rear end.

There is a spiral driving gear that drives the chewed up gear and shaft that you have. You should make sure the spiral gear is OK before giving it the chance to ruin another driven gear. My catalog says your gear set is used on various 40-47 models with 4 speed.

When the gears were available "new" they were sold as a matched set. It is recommended that both gears be replaced.
The gear was part # 602798 nad fit various 1937-1946 1/2 ton trucks with 4 speeds.
