You don't! There is no adjustment for backlash on the 1929-30 Chevy steering box. About the only thing you can do to decrease the backlash is to either take apart the box and turn the gear 180 degrees or replace both the worm and gear with new old stock units...if you can find them! Even at that, there will still be some noticable backlash. :( :( :(

This Car just started to shimmy after hitting a bump, and the only loose thing I could find was the play in the steering box. Can I put a 32 Box in it?

Yes, you can put a '32 box in it if you wish. However, I would check the drag link and the tie rod ends first before you do. The springs in the tie rod ends are Mickey Mouse for 1930, so you might want to put in new rebuild kits in both tie rod ends and the drag link first and then try it. laugh laugh laugh

Who makes a rebuild kit for the '30-31 tie rod ends? They have the spiral springs and not like the later ones.

Part of the Moog EV-1 kit can be used on the 1930. However, the helical springs in the kit cannot be used because the 1930 tie rod ends are too short. The ball cups and etc. can be used in the 1930, but the "rivet" cannot be used either. The spiral springs for 1930 are too weak and they should be replaced with new old stock springs if they can be found. I located some NOS springs for my '30 coupe and they made a big difference!

To use the heavier helical springs, some dudes have converted to the 1932 tie rod ends, and then the entire Moog EV-1 kit can be used. yipp laugh laugh laugh

JYD, After reading your 1st post I went to bed thinking about finding an area on the box that may take some play out of the box. When I put the mask bearing in I went to center the steering wheel and found that there was no centering the wheel, you can turn it forever, the stops are on the front wheels.I will remove the pitman arm and see if I can find an area with less play.

I do have a spare 32 front end with the drag link and tie rod ends. I'll check to see if I can find the Moog EV-1 kit and do that first like you said.

Just checked the Parts store, they do not have a listing on the kit. Is the FS-148 on page 227 of the Filling Station the Moog EV-1? Looks like you need two kits to do the job.

Yes, that is the correct kit from the Filling Station. If you have a complete 1932 tie rod and drag link assembly, you might want to convert over since the '32 has the helical springs. laugh laugh laugh

Well, as usual I ran into a snag. The Tie Rod ends off the 32 are servicable, but the Drag ling end at the Pitman Arm has the first two threads juiced up. It was a Bear to remove the screw out.I think I can save it if I had a tap large enough for the job. Will head to the Machine Shop and see if they have anything.
