A friend is restoring a 1928 national and is after a diff and drive shaft assembly. I have a number of spare 26 assemblies and was wondering if these would fit. Can anyone explain what are the differences between the superior and national rear assemblies and if they interchangeable.

cheers

Ken

Ken - The brakes are different and the big difference from Superiors is the AB wheelbase went from 103 to 107 inches. Maybe the extra 4 inches was all in the engine compartment?

My Parts book lists the series K V AA and AB to have the same part number 343871 for the propeller shaft, so I would say yes they will work as far as the shaft itself goes but may have to include the nut if you sell him one of yours.

thanks for the help chaps. It turns out he only needs drive shaft, crown wheel and pinion which I understand are the same 25 - 28. I have half a dozen spares but unfortunately most have some degree of pitting on the teeth. Was wondering how tolerant these vehicles are to this kind of wear - would the noise be intolerable. I note in a recent listing the difficulty in getting replacement CW & Ps. Ive heard that some one in Australia is supplying them but dont know the company - apparently someone dealing in vintage Pontiac & Chev parts - any ideas from the guys in aus? Re drive shaft - I understand there is a slight difference between 27 & 28 - is this correct.

Cheers

Try Chevparts (www.chevparts.com.au) for contact details. Ian Maris deals in Chev & Ponti parts. He may have crown wheels and pinions; you never know.
Re the drive shaft ; the part no 343871 applies to both Series AA & AB (27 & 28) so there does not appear to be a difference.
The crown wheels and pinions turn up . They are either 42/11 or 46/11. I had a 42/11 but it broke and I saw an ad for a 46/11 NOS and put that in . It works well for my application; I live in Sydney.
I doubt that pitting would cause noise in the way that wear does. What really causes noise is when you lose a tooth off a gear.
Hope that this helps.
