Will a '49 distributor work in a '31?
Couldn't find anything in search and didn't know how to cross reference it between my '31 & '49 manual. Thanks.
I think I'm a fairly wise person because I'm smart enough to realise I'm not too bright.

They are not the same.
The 1929 through 1935 distribtors will interchange but it is not advisable to do so. There are many different features.
The 1936 is an odd ball due to the oil pump connection.
The 1937 through 1962 are the same to the extent they will all fit but there again should not be done.

Thanks again Gene. Going to try and start the '31 motor I have out back in a week or two but not sure if the distributor is OK. Electolock is gone and it seems the bolt coming out for wire was worked over with rubber and washers to keep from shorting out. Will try it anyway. If not will have to redo it.

Chevgene, you stated 1929 through 1935 distribtors and 1937 through 1962 ditributors will fit but should not be used. Is this because the advance curve is different between the years or?

The advance curve is one factor. The pre 1933 distributors had no provision for a vacuum advance (also the block had none), required a connection for the eletrolock. The 216 had many advance curve changes also the location of the grease cup was changed due to motor mount brackets. From 1954 and up they were mostly the same as far as the advance curve is concerned. The 1950-53 216 and 235 had very different advance curves.
