I have an interior for my '49 Chevy 4400. Of course, it comes without any instructions and I have a couple of questions.

First, the door weatherstripping, not the one mentioned in the manual from oldcarmanualproject that goes on the inside of the door opening in the cab, but the one that goes on the door, Brothers' catalog number DFS4755. It looks like the door has to come off to glue it on, but that isn't the question. The cross-section of the weatherstrip is not symmetric - how is the weatherstrip oriented when it is installed properly? The sales rep at Brothers didn't know, but may (or may not) be able to find a picture to fax.

The two-piece headliner is cardboard and came rolled up. I can't unroll it without causing creases. What does one do in this case? Would wetting it with something that wouldn't stain relax it enough?

Thanks for any help.

There has been a lot of discussion on the AD door weatherstrip material on the Stovebolt forum. Most agree that Steele has the proper weather stripping. The others are not made right and cause door closing problems. I intend to go with Steele on my '49.

Steele Rubber Products has always tried to duplicate the original parts. I knew Lynn Steele who started the company in Detroit area before moving to North Carolina. I believe his son and other family members still run the company. They are not cheap only good.

I sold Lynn Steele several NOS original rubber parts when he was first starting to reproduce GM rubber parts. I met him at the Pate Swap Meet in the early 70's when I was buying discontinued and obsolete parts from dealers. He used the NOS rubber parts for patterns and compared them to his products.

Lynn was a tool and die-maker by profession. Worked many years in auto industry making tooling for new vehicles. Don't remember why he started making tools and rubber parts in his spare time. It morphed into a large business. Just proves that a good product and good service will help build a good business.

I thank all who contribute here. This was a very satisfying weekend. Both doors of my 49 Chevy 4400 have new weatherstripping. I couldn't have done it without your contributions on this board and the Stovebolt forum as well.

The doors are tight now and hopefully they won't rattle as much - before there was essentially no weather stripping - it looked as though the sun melted the original stuff. I heat my home with two corn stoves and the Chevy truck is full of corn right now (hydraulic grain bed) but I am looking forward to taking her to town to see how much improved the noise is.

Thanks,

Harell, this is off of the subject track but I noticed your address as being in Brookings SD. I am trying to get some info on the previous owners of my '29 coupe. I do not have their names in front of me since the car is stored at another members shop. If I got those names could you help me find out some of the history of this car? Please send me a personal message so we are not tying up this thread. Thanks - Art Sell
