One of the horns in my '51 Chevy does not work. I have tested it off the car and all I get is a feeble, faint noise. The other horn works great. I looked in the service manual, but all I can do is check the airgap (which is OK) as I do not have an ammeter. My car has been changed to 12V sometime in it's previous life. Can these horns be repaired or rebuilt? If so, is there anybody who can perform this kind of service? Or maybe I should just look for a good replacement? It is the driver's side unit, stamped 644. Thanks

Horn parts were never available.
If it were my car I would get a pair of 12 V horns.....easier to find.

Yep, a pair of 12 volt horns would be the way to go for your 12 volt system.

Thanks for your help. Since I am planning to restore this car back to the original 6V system anyway (I've already acquired most of the parts to do so), I'll look for an original 6V horn. One more question though, will operating the remaining good 6V horn on 12V eventually do it in?

A quick "beep" will not cause any damage. A long drawn out "HOONK" is not advised.
