Is there another supplier for an oil filter besides the filling station?

There is one on my 28 but I figured that I should replace it. What do you think? That filter has sat full of oil for 30 plus years.

How to you get the regular brake band off the rear axle. I had lots of oil/grease under the rear hubs and want to be able to clean both the emergency and regular pads really well.

Thanks

Hi,

You will need a rear wheel puller.

If you don't have one and the vehicle is driveable, loosen the wheel nut 1 to 2 turns. Then drive the vehicle with some forceful tight turns.

I do NOT recommend the practice of screwing a puller on the end of the axle and hitting it with a hammer. Good chance of ruing a good axle.

How do you get the brake band off of the peg on the rear?

I wish I had a wheel puller two weeks ago! What do they look like? Anyone got a picture of one?

Thanks!

They are heavily coveted by the 4-banger crew. Be very careful you don't purchase a F**D, as it will not fit. Also, do not waste money on the type that screws on the axle by the axle threads and is pounded with a large hammer. All they do is damage the threads and render the axle unusable.

ILO of a puller, and if the vehicle can be driven, loosen the axle nut, and drive in some tight circles.

I have some of the cannister type units from that period.

If you have a photo or dimensions I can check.

Is a photo of that wheel puller available showing it rotated 90 degrees clockwise (from above)? I'm figuring I can make one and there's no use re-inventing the wheel if at all possible.

Thanks

Don,

A puller is easy enough to make if you have access to a lathe.
The hubcap thread on the wheel hub is 2 3/8" diameter and 16 TPI. I have since found a genuine twenties puller, but the one I made has a ring of 3/4" steel plate with the above internal thread which is welded to piece of about 1 1/2" OD heavy wall pipe about 2 1/2" long from memory. There is a solid end welded into the other end of the pipe which was drilled and tapped for a 5/8" UNC bolt, which pushes on the axle end after the puller is screwed onto the hubcap thread. The coarse thread bolt works OK, but a 3/4" UNF bolt would have been better. The puller was made in a hurry and I did not have time to wait for the shops to open after the weekend to get the fine thread bolt.

If you are interested in making one and want to give me an e-mail address I could send you a photo of the one I made with some dimensions, and a photo of a genuine twenties one for comparison. There are no critical dimensions other than the hub cap thread though - I just used what was in the scrap box for the materials to make the puller.

Hi Frank:

Yep... I'll make one. And if they are easy, I'll make a couple.

I made some lifetime friends at a tire store with an extra tire removal tool for these old tires/wheels. Mine took 20 minutes and the week before, they spent over 3 hours on the same type tire that someone else brought in without the tool. I told them to call me the next time they are faced with that problem.

My E Mail is rummieixl@comcast.net

Thanks so much.

Regarding a wheel puller, I'm planning to make one using a steel truck hubcap. All you do is drill a hole in the end, weld on a nut (1/2 inch or bigger), and screw in a bolt the same size. To use it you turn the hub cap on all the way (you can use the nut to turn it on)and then turn in the bolt until the wheel pops off. I found one like this in an old farm shop this spring and seems to me to be a great idea. Anyone else try this?

I made my wheel puller a while ago out of a steel truck hub cap and a bolt I had lying around. It works fine but if I were to make another one I would probably use a bigger bolt. A 1/2 inch fine thread grade 8 bolt would probably be about right.
