Can you believe it? I received the following information from a friend of mine outside of the VCCA.

----BEGIN-------
JUST IN TIME FOR X MAS. If you didn't believe that GM was in trouble, the fact that they are selling off much of the Heritage Collection (600 vehicles that are rotated in display)to raise cash is certainly some proof. One has to wonder how the Barrett Jackson aution this January will do compared with the past few years.

From Scott Settlemire of GM:

Good afternoon, Camaro Comrades, Firebird Friends,
and Corvette Cousins............

As you may know, the GM Heritage Collection numbers
in the many hundreds of cars and trucks - from 'first
builts' and 'last builts' to one-off show cars to
SEMA show cars.

The Decision has been made to sell off select
vehicles. (Indeed, a sad day for some of us......)

There's a little of everything -- from the Legendary
Buick Blackhawk -- to (are you sitting down?) a
COUPLE of 1989 Corvette ZR1s -- the Jon Moss built
Track-dominating Black 572 ZL1 -- A C5 Alpha and a C5
Beta -- The Tiger Shark -- the LT5 Camaro -- a 1904
Olds Touring -- several GTOS -- both old and new -- a
couple of 1970 muscle cars -- a mid nineties "510"
Impala SS -- and many, many pace cars and trucks.

This may be the time to break open the piggy
bank.................

PLEASE NOTE:
This is a preliminary list -- it is very likely
subject to change -
Barrett-Jackson will, in the coming week or two, put
out pictures of each of these cars on their website.

This is the Scottsdale, AZ auction -- January 13-19,
2009.

Please feel free to share with your club members and
friends.

That's sad ! even sader if they sell some of the cars that were donated or sold to them to preserve them for the memory of long standing members in the various GM family's

About 25% of them are scheduled to be sold at the Barrett-Jackson auction next week in Scottsdale. If you want to see them, the Speed Channel covers this event. The auction starts on Tuesday, Jan 13.

Don't forget some of this money will go to pay their labor costs which run 25 - 40% more than foreign auto plants in the southern states. This so they can continue to try to sell cars that are higher priced and lower quality than their foreign competitors.

We are going to the Barrett-Jackson auction next week so we'll get one last chance to see these cars.

According to GM they are only auctioning "slightly less important cars from the collection....anything they can semi-easily buy another one of when (if) times get better."

However, GM also states they may have to sell some of the more precious ones, such as completely irreplaceable and one-off concept cars, which would bring much more money if times get tighter. When they first announced they were going to sell, it was only going to be 50 cars. As of today it is almost 250 but Barrett-Jackson has sold out its auction spaces for the Scottsdale event. On the other hand, Barrett-Jackson does have people who withdraw cars at the last minute, and often add new cars after the sale has started so we shall see. Also, their Palm Beach auction is not too far off. This tale is not over.

GM having said this, however, it is known by insiders in Scottsdale that many of the Heritage cars at Barrett-Jackson will have been modified with rare and/or experimental powertrain components to improve performance and driveability; and several bidders have hired a retired GM expert in high performance (Mark McPhail) as a consultant to help them identify these cars.

Some say this is just a publicity stunt by GM to convince the American people how much GM needs more government tax money as the money from this sale is just a drop to a company that is burning $1 billion in cash a month! Only time will tell about this theory as Barrett-Jackson's Palm Beach sale will come right about the time the Barack Hussein Obama administration and Congress are supposed to give more bailouts to GM and the UAW!!

Personally, I am going to wait to place my bids until Ford has to sell off The Henry Ford Museum at Greenfield Village. They have a much nicer collection of classic cars (not just Ford).

I attended Barrett-Jackson today and there were about 225 GM "Heritage Museum" cars. Most of them were late model cars that had been modified with test equipment and run on test tracks. Most were not street legal and are being sold with "scrap" titles or "bill of sale only". Based on the sales I saw, they are not drawing much money. However, the first day is for cars that do not draw much money.

They did have some true "classic cars" but they are being sold as being museum cars which may or may not run or be whole (perhaps no pistons, or transmission gears) in areas that one can not see. I noticed a couple of 50's Olds were sold to a museum.

The Speed Channel people claim this is not a sale to raise money due to GM's financial problems, but simply a routine "culling of the herd" that all museums do on a periodic basis. 25% of the herd is quite a culling.

so far the autos offered from the collection would for the most part be classified as unremarkable. of course the rarer cars will be sold later in the auction. considering GMs financial woes it's very unlikely the funds garnered from this event will have any significant impact on their bottom line.

my self, I enjoy seeing a 4 door, 1954 Oldsmobile as I do a 1 of 1 Corvette

The bottom line is not what the gurus in GM and Congress are interested in anyway, they are interested in what publicity is reveled in the mainstream U.S. media. What effect do you really think one trip of driving to Washington D.C. in new hybrid cars Vs. flying in a private jet really had anyway?
It is all childish games! They use the B-word and the T-word like crazy. It's OBSCENE!!!!

It is very common for museums to sell off inventory, the money that this is generating for GM is "lunch money" in the big picture. This defrays some of the operating cost of the collection, and creates more captial to aquire other pieces that might be of more interest. I would not read that deep into it. I heard several years ago from people at Chevrolet Creative Service's when GM was aquiring the collection that they were planing on liquidating a large portion of it after the 100th Aniversarry.
I was surprised that the one of the cars sold on Tuesday (Black 60 Impala Flat top) that was part of the Heritage Collection my best friend did the interior when my other friend owned it. The dealer emblem on the trunk "RUPP" and the clear plastic covers gave it away. It was pretty cool and it was a real nice car when my friend (and fellow VCCA member) owned it

Creig Jackson has announced that they will be selling more of the GM Heritage cars at upcoming Palm Beach auction. He said they are still working with GM on how many but could be equal to the Scottsdale auction. That would mean another 200-250 cars. If that happens they will have sold off 1/2 of their holdings. That would seem to be more than a culling.

We shall see!!

Why are you so concerned about what they do with their cars?

I am not concerned. I am just reporting information to this thread. I thought that was what we did on a forum.

Let me clarify myself, you are the one who reported some old news and the above comment just made it seem like you were concerned.

I did not realize it was old news that Barrett-Jackson was going to sell more of them at the Palm Beach auction(I only see mentions of the Scottsdale auction in previous posts). Also, Jackson announced it today on the Speed Channel, but if it is old news to you, simply ignore it. Life's too short to get upset by old news.

I was far from upset reading your posts, as a matter of fact I found it entertaining.

The old news was that GM was liqudating the collection, you are correct the Palm Beach information was a recent addition to the story.
