Guys,
Trying to work through what part of the stop/tail lamp set up has a short.

I have the passenger side tail bucket off the car. I want to check out the two wires before I reinstall the tail bucket just to make sure that both wires are operating correctly.

Is my logic correct:

1) with light switch off and brake pedal not depressed neither wire should cause test lamp to light

2) with lights off and brake pedal depressed only the stop light wire should cause test lamp to light,

3) with lights on but brake not depressed - only tail lamp wire should cause test lamp to light

4) with lights on and brake pedal depressed - both wires individually should cause test lamp to light

Make sense?

John

Without the taillamp being grounded, the test lamp may come on on both wires whenever the brake pedal is depressed or the lights are on, and will probably come on if you test between the tailamp assembly and the chassis.

George,
If my logic is wrong how would you recommend I proceed?

My first response would only be true if the bulb is in place; otherwise you logic is correct. If the bulb is not installed and the test lamp illuminates on both wires with only one input, the other taillamp assembly may not be grounded.

You may have blown the fuse if your lights were on when you changed the bulbs.
