I purchased a 1937 Chevrolet some years ago, with a clear title. While reading an article in Old Cars Weekly about VIN # location, I decided took look for mine. There were only two holes in that lacation. Now I'm wondering if my ID number is correct or a number issued by the state. I'm looking for an example of a vin number that I can compare mine to.
aybe the first 5 digits. I don't expect anyone to divulge their entire VIN number.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Roger,
On the 1937-1939 the serial mumber was under the hood on the right side of the cowl. There were two tags in that location. The Fisher Body tag and the serial number tag. I don't recall what the O.C. said).....The serial number would read like firat one or two numbers, this indiactes the assembly plant. Then there will be two letters. In 1937 would be GC for the Master and GA for the Master DeLuxe. Then two more numbers indiacting the month assembled, then several numbers which are the production sequence numbers.
The engine number which was stamped on a little raised pad next to the fuel pump (if it has the original engine) ....would read like from 1 through 1187821. Could begin with a letter.
Prior to 1955 most states used the engine number for registration.
How does the new seat material look in the Caprice? I saw it at Perfection while they were working on it.

The number would be behind the dizzy instead of by the fuel pump wouldn't it Gene? Mine is on my 38.

Hello once again Gene.

The number on my title is nothing like you say. It reads VA56K and then a numerical sequence. I suspect this may be a number assigned by MVD. The car is a street rod with a 400 c.i. engine.

The caprice turned out great. John does excellent work. He had lots of problems because the covers weren't sewn properly. He had to add extra foam in a lot of areas. Also, the only covers I could get were sewn in 71 Impala pattern, but with the proper material. But it looks a lot better than what was left of the original material.

Thanks for your reply.

I bought my 37 Coupe in 1968 and went round and round with the state of Texas for months with the title application being regected for incorrect numbers but with no explanation.

Finally learned that as someone else said they used motor numbers in the 30s. My motor was a fresh Sears rebuild and the plate near the dist. had been machined and was blank.

Now I knew what to ask for and Texas assigned me a number, something like T-12345 and had us stamp that on the pad and make a pencil tracing for them and shazam I had a Texas title!

Prior to 1955 most states used the engine number for registration. If the engine was changed and the proper "steps" taken the state would assign a new number. They all did it different ways. If a new Chevrolet block was installed the old numbers would be stamped in.
