I checked my 39 manual and it says the taililight is an 1154, so no problem NAPA has them. After a bunch of wrestling/swearing I realize my tailight sockets take a straight pin bulb and the 1154 I bought has offset pins. This taillight socket is original so soes an 1154 come in both flavours straight or offset pins?

The 1154 comes only with the off set pins. This prevents the bulb from being installed incorrectly (brake light has brighter filament). My '39 and every one I have ever seen uses the 1154 bulb. What did the old bulb have?

Just going back in my memory....at one time there was a bulb LIKE a 1154 available but had the pins straight across. It was an 1158. Was important to install it corrrectly so the correct filament would light. GM never used it though.

Doh! Your absolutely right, the pigtail in the socket wasn't all the down and it's little tab was in the pin slot keeping the new bulb from going down all the way... now I see why new cars don't have these anymore.
Thanks again Gene.

Hey Gene, It seems like I remember going through this a while back, or maybe it was over at the Stovebolt. In fact I thought I had printed out something but I sure can't find it now. In my other hobby (antique radio) there are lots of charts for bulbs that show the specs, glass and base shape, is there anything like that for the automotive bulbs? I'm refering to the older style bulbs like pre-Vietnam and back into the 30's. Back in high school in the late 50's, I seem to remember seeing charts in auto shop class that were handed out by the bulb manufacturers, i.e.,GE, TungSol etc. And wasn't the standard that the 6v bulbs had offset pins and the 12v had pins straight across?? Thanks Denny Graham Sandwich, IL

I don't recall such a chart but there probably was some. 6 and 12 V bulbs can both have straight or off set pins. In applications where there are two contacts on the base ( for double filament bulbs) the pins will be off set so bulb can not be installed incorectly.

Offset pins for double filament bulbs holds except for some of the very early bulbs. Some of them have straight pins and can be installed either correctly or wrong. Guess someone did not think about offset pins and sockets until they installed a few bulbs the wrong way. Turning 180 deg. would solve the problem. I found this site http://www.donsbulbs.com/cgi-bin/r/b.pl/1154~usa.html that goes into gory details on the many different kinds of 1154 bulbs. Mike

Yep, that’s just what I was lookin’ for. He's got a good selection and excelent discription. If you’re a stickler he probably has an original bulb. But those prices, man that kinda takes my breath away. 1154 - $6.40 TungSol vs $1.75 from vendor (China) 63 - $5.90 TungSol vs $1.25 from vendor (China)
