Can my tranny be ID by casting Number? It is 590204. Also my flywheel. It appears that the ring gear and flywheel are one piece. Is this possible? Casting Nubers on flywheel are B-226 344100 and a GL-8. It has 110 teeth. If the ring gear and flywheel are one piece, how do I repair ring gear? Thanks John

The B-226 indicates it was cast February 22, 1926. In order to replace the ring gear you must cut the old one off and prepare the flywheel to accept the new ring gear. Once the flywheel is prepared the ring gear must be heated all around and then installed on the wheel. Not a project for the timid.

They can certainly be separated. As to the flywheel you need an oven with heat around 400 degrees C to remove/change the ring gear, without damaging the parts. New gears are normally available.

It is also possible to weld the damaged teeth (use wire feed welder) and file or grind back to original shape. It has been done successfully several times but care must be taken to make sure the "new" teeth are not left too thick or wide.

John, If you discover that the ring gear is removable and you want to repair it. It might be a good idea to take it off and turn it 1/4 turn then reinstall. 4 cylinder engines usually have a favorite place to stop when they are turned off. That's why the ring gear gets worn in the same spot all the time. By turning it you would be starting over in a new spot. Just a thought.
