Want me to start a Poll to see who thinks that there should have been one? Maybe if we get enough people responding, we can revise history... sort of like ex-presidents do! talk Oops... strike that... no politics allowed on this board!!!

Don, my suggestion would be for you to state which listing you saw this in and let everyone else comment about that specific list. We already had one book published 15 years ago that caused huge headaches for all of us purists. snore

There is an oil can and it is listed in the 1930-1932 Chevrolet parts books in the tool section. And, guess what? I have a feeling that good old Chipper is going to agree with me on this one! If so, that makes two......which is another world record! laugh laugh laugh laugh laugh And, by the way, for those of you who don't know, Donald's "very informed" people that he has been talking to are the Model "T" Ford dudes, and they haven't been right about anything yet!! laugh laugh laugh

Do you suppose the oil can mounted on the engine side of the firewall in a spring loaded bracket ? I have one but do not know if its Ford or Chevrolet .There are no markings on it [the bracket] Was the oil can marked or plain? Thought I might add to the confusion. chevy wink

Donald: To answer your question, it sounds like you are heavy into the Budweiser again!! :(

Woody: The oil can was not on the firewall, and they were unmarked....that is to say that "Chevrolet" was not on the oil can. laugh laugh laugh laugh

No it isn't!!!!! The oil can is round and it has a crooked neck and it is painted purple with a yellow stripe!! Go find one Donald, and after you drink your normal case of Budweiser, you will be amazed at how easy this oil can is to see!

Chipper, give me some dimensions and I will compare your dimensions with the two oil cans that I have. I have two like you describe, one is olive drab and one is plain metal, and they both have a raised oval rib in the center of the can. They both have a metal screw on cap on the metal spout and the cap is held onto the can with a little chain. Funny, but I bought both of these NOS oil cans in an army surplus store about 20 years ago for a nickel a piece, and they were army surplus from WWII and there was a big pile of them at the time. laugh laugh laugh laugh laugh laugh

Skippie,
The can is 3 3/16" high 2 1/2" wide and 1 11/16" thick. The oval is depressed into the the side and is 2 1/4" high and 1 1/2" wide. Some of the cans have a "C" in a diamond stamped from the inside(raised) and others have plain bottoms. There is a screw on top spout (or tube) that has ~ 1" dia. threads on the cap and the tube is about 1 3/4" long. There is a small metal cap on the threaded end to the tube. It is the one that is visable in the "Double Check" filmstrip. It is also pictured several other places in Chevy literature.

I also have one or two of the ones that you describe. They are often described as WWII machine gun oil cans on eBay and other web pages.
Unfortunately they are not Chevy issue. curse

Chipper! Thanks for the dimensions. Both of my cans are identical to each other, however their dimensions are slightly different from your can, though they all appear to have the exact same configuration. My cans are a little taller and a little wider, and the oval has slightly different dimensions, and my spouts are a little shorter as well. Do your cans have the little chain that holds the cap on to the spout, and is your metal cap domed on top? I appreciate you posting the dimensions. Now, I'm going to start a new issue.....by saying that your cans are wrong and that mine are right for Chevrolet! laugh laugh Ha ha! How about it Donald, are my cans the correct ones for Chevrolet?? How about another poll??  Just kidding because my oil cans are definitely military! laugh laugh

Well, Well, I hate to bust your bubbles but the O.D. cans with the chained on threaded cap at one time contained bore cleaner to clean the bores of machine guns and rifles with in WWII they had a foul smelling brown liquid that removed the corrosive mercury based primer material used then in rifle cartrige primers. Army surplus stores sold them by the jillions for a long time.

Well, well! Thank you Macky Wacky for helping me to prove that Chipper's "Olive Drab" oil can is, in fact, a military can, and not a Chevrolet can. I mean......why would Chevrolet use and Olive Drab oil can anyway unless their cars carried machine guns? True, Bonnie and Clyde used machine guns, but they drove Fords! Well....it looks like the old Junkyard Dog has won another one! I owe ya a beer Macky Wacky, but trust me here.....it won't be Budweiser! yipp yipp laugh

Donald! Once again you have shown to the world your vast knowledge on absolutely nothing......except for your expertise in drinking Budweiser of course! :( laugh

Donald, you are painted Olive Drab so the oil cans were made to match your Budweiser complexion!

Donald would, but first he has to have an oil can! Second, he would have to figure out how to get the cap off, and third, he would probably fill the oil can with Budweiser anyway.....you know....in case he ran into any emergencies! laugh laugh laugh laugh

He would most likely paint it red and white to match the Bud Can though laugh laugh

Just to set the record straight. The Chevy oil can is olive drab but does not have a chain on the cap. It is not military but can be confused for one if you just take a casual glance. They are very different. :p
