I am in the middle of rebuilding my 1931 engine and have a few quesstions. I can find the torque settings on everything but the main bearing caps. Can some one tell the correct setting. Also, When reinstalling the pistons and rod assys in there a front or can they go in either way. I see no markings on the pistons or rod ti indicate which is front or back. Last qustion, Is there a front and/or back to the center main cap. I see that it is marked with a "F" IS THAT FOR FRONT. I marked everything when I took it apart but want to make sure that it was correctly assembled the last time it was apart, Thanks

The original tightening specification is "tight". I would not use any more than 60-65 ft/lbs on the mains. The pistons do not have a front or back so can be installed either way. The rods are installed only one way. The piston pin bolt goes on the cam side. That also positions the dipper to pickup the oil and feed it into rod bearing. The front and rear main caps will only go on one way so the oil pan can be installed. The center should have a "F" and arrow pointing forward but sometimes the arrow can not be seen. Just put the "F" so it faces front.

Thanks Chipper, I appreciate the quick response to my questions.
I may have a few more before I finish my project..Here is one more. Is there suppose to be a washer between the oil pump and the distributor?

I think I can answer that one, courtesy of the JYD.

There is a washer between distributor and oil pump. It can be made by using a slightly undersized thick "hard" washer from your fastener supplier and drilling it out so the distributor shaft will slide through it. To install: With the oil pump in and secured in place, slide the washer past the camshaft worm gear and lay it flat on top of the oil pump, then slide the distributor into place and engage it into the oil pump slot and the camshaft gears.

I think I've got that right. Chipper may want to add / correct something........

All the Best,

Chip

The hardened thrust washer must be in place on top of the oil pump to push the distributor gear and shaft up about .075" when the distributor is installed. That is so the round collar on the bottom side of the weight plate won't ride against the distributor housing while turning and wear a groove in the distributor housing.

wink :)

Thanks to all of you. That bit of infromation will save me some headaches down the road since there isn't a trust washer on this engine. I wonder how many more don't have that washer? Thanks again...

The thrust washer is usually missing most of the time.
