my speedometer does not work. i have traced it to the transmission speedometer gear housing. i have installed a new cable, but the square end of the cable is loose in the square hole of the speedometer gear housing. is the housing gear axle replaceable or do i need to buy a new housing. i think that "chevy of the fortys" have a new gear axle, but they don't show a bearing. any ideas guys?...kw

Hi kwchevy1940,

Your question is a tad confusing. When the transmission end of the cable is inserted into the receptacle on the transmission it a) does not fit the square shaft sticking out, or b) there is no square shaft sricking out, c) the shaft doesn't turn?

In most cases the gear in the tail housing is stripped and must be replaced.

well evidently the square end does fit, but its not real tight. i pulled the cable behind the speedometer and went for a short distance. the cable did not rotate. how do you get access to the big trans gear to see if it is stripped. the gear looks good on the speedometer gear housing? is it a tear down situation to get to the tail housing gear?

Take a close look at the fitting that the cable connects to. Use a wrench to remove the big nut and then remove the speedo driven gear. Look on the other side for a nut also.

If the gear on the shaft that connects to the speedometer cable is ok then the other gear that is pressed onto the U-joint is likely bad. It will be necessary to unbolt and split the ball housing, take apart the U-joint, unbolt the front half from the transmission output shaft to change the gear. Once you have the ball housing slid back you can see the gears and how well they mesh.

thanks chip, i believe i will wait until winter down time to pull the tail piece off. since i haven't done this before. no need to lose driving time in good weather. it might be a day job for the experienced, but might take me longer to figure it all out and i don't want to hurry and mess up. again thanks guys for your help....kw
