Hi all; First off, I joined this club a year ago. And since then, you've all been a wealth of info and help! Thanks to you all.I have a 37 4dr master deluxe sport sedan. The problem I'm haveing now is, that when the car is parked, and turned off, I can pull the shifter lever, out of gear, with some ease. This past summer, I put in a new clutch plate, new preasure plate and refaced the flywheel. All of this seemed to help alot toward tighting up the shifter lever. But is there something else that could be worn out to cause this? Thank you for your help.

Joe, I don't quite understand your question. The way I see it the transmussion can easily be shifted from "a gear position" to neutral when the engine is off. This is normal - unless the car would be parked on an incline and there was a load on the gears caused by the engine compression keeping the car from rolling. Some times the 1937-39 three speeds geat a sloppy shift pattern. This is caused when the parts in the shift tower get worn.

Gene, Thanks for the info. I just thought that when it was in gear, and parked, you should'nt be able to pull it out, without first, pushing in on the clutch. I put alot of new parts in the trany, but did'nt have any for the shifter tower. Thanks Agin.

I don't know the history of your car, clue us in. Does the car still have the vacuum shifting assist or has some "worm" converted it to Non- Vacuum shift with one of those aftermarket kits?
Don't get so excited about me calling someone a "worm", In my line of work a "worm" is someone that has just enough experiance to get the whole crew in trouble if he isn't closely supervised by a experianced hand. I was a bonifite "Worm" for several months and then I became a "weavil". That was back in the year of 1959. Now I don't really know what I am, concerning old Chevrolets.. maybe a educated weavil? I will have to ask Raymundo and maybe Chev Nut and JYD, they are my mentors........
By the way, every 3 speed manual Cheyv in my herd will come out of any gear it is stopped in when I move the shifter lever to neutral, 3 on the floor and three on the tree even the TH400 with column shift (1968) I don't have anything else evcept a 88 GMC with a manual 5 speed OD it comes out of gear but wont start unless the clutch is depressed all the way. Yep I do have one of the cars designed by a congressional committee (2005) and a 1995 Silverado with automatic OD, I can't put them into neutral or get them out of park without jumping thru a couple of hoops!

MrMack, I suspect he has the standard model '39 with the floor shifter. The Master Delux had the column shift I belive Cleon

The vacuum assisted column gear shift was a $20 option for all 1939 models. My Master DeLuxe has the floor shift.
On the "old" cars the lever can be moved from position to position at any time. It just will pull out easier when the clutch is depressed if there is no load on the gears (as noted above)
The car in question is a 1937 model.

Ok so then there isn't any problem with the shifter if it can be shifted into neutral from a gear when the engine is dead, seems to me. I wormed that one up, didn't I?

We can always count on Gene to have the facts. And if I would have read the post closer I would have known it was a '37 and not a '39. OH Well. Cleon
